GEMS: God’s Elegant Mature Servants
We welcome you to GEMS this Thursday, September 27th at 12:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The speaker will be Loraine Campbell, Executive Director of the Troy Historic Village. Her presentation will be on discovering the (mostly untold) stories of some amazing Michigan women. The menu for lunch will include chicken salad and egg salad on croissants, salads, vegetables and desserts. There are two sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the narthex. Please sign up if you plan to attend, and if you would like to bring either a salad, vegetable or dessert.
We look forward to seeing you and a friend! For more information, please contact Debbie Leafdale or Joyce Jarnick.
Peace and Global Witness Offering
We will be collecting this offering again this year. Normally this is collected on World Communion Sunday (October 7th), but since we are worshiping at the Kirk that day, envelopes are already in the pews if you would like to donate to this annual offering. Much of the money collected is used by the “…Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and justice in cultures of violence, including our own, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness.”
Special Lecture and Dinner- October 5
You are invited to the Kyes Lecture and Dinner at Kirk in the Hills at 6:30 pm on October 5th with speaker Dr. Tom Long, named one of the best preachers in America by CNN. The first 10 participants from Troy who sign up have their dinner fee waived! Call Jen at 248-973-8011 to register.
Worship on October 7th at the Kirk
For World Communion Sunday, we will join the Kirk for worship. You are encouraged to attend the 11am service, but you can also attend at 8:00 am or 9:15 am if you prefer. Let Jasmine know if you have concerns about driving or would like to carpool.
Bible Study Options: Barnes and Noble, Small Groups
The Bible Study at Barnes and Noble is still going strong! Each week we gather on Tuesdays at 2pm to discuss the upcoming Scripture passage for Sunday.
We also are invited to join the Kirk’s sermon-based small group, which will begin the week of October 7 to reflect on the Tom Long sermon. Wayne is facilitating a group in Rochester, hosted at the home of a Kirk member. If you would like to make new friendships, consider joining this group! Sign up online at kirkinthehills.org under the “resources” tab, or call Greta at 248-973-8013.
Deacons Partner with American Red Cross for a 2nd Blood Drive: October 9th
Our Deacons have partnered with the Red Cross to offer a second blood drive in 2018 to help meet the needs of our community. The Red Cross will provide signage, donor outreach, advertising, and all other resources. The Deacons will provide access to our fellowship hall, volunteers and homemade cookies for our donors. The blood drive will take place here at the church on Tuesday, October 9th (11:00am to 5:00pm). Please see the sign-up sheet posted in the Narthex if you wish to make some cookies for our donors. Donating blood makes a big difference in the lives of others—please consider donating if you are able. Contact Gwen Thompson if you have any questions regarding the blood drive.
Fall Mission Project: Ingathering 2018
Each fall our congregation donates items to help the Detroit Presbytery fulfill specific need requests made by 30-plus Detroit Area charitable organizations. If you’ve taken a tag to purchase items, please return the items with the tag attached to that item and note the value of the item on the tag. The due date for returning the items is September 30th. If you would like to participate by donating cash and having the Deacons purchase items for you, please let Joyce Peterson or Louise Glazier know. Thank you, The Deacons
