Consecration Sunday, May 21st
On Sunday, May 21st, we will be dedicating our pledges during worship for the upcoming fiscal year which begins July 1st. Worship will be followed by a celebration lunch in fellowship hall. Plan now to attend services on this important Sunday, and to stay for the lunch provided by the finance committee. Over the next few weeks we will be having several “minute for stewardship” speakers during worship, sharing their thoughts on the meaning of giving and sharing God’s gifts.
Summer English Workshop: A June Mission here at church
Volunteers who worked with the Summer English Workshop last summer had such fun teaching our foreign-born neighbors English…American style. Most of those volunteers want to do it again. But, this summer, we will need more volunteers as we are offering two weekly class sessions each of the four weeks in June.
The Lesson Guide Sheets used on Saturday will be repeated on the following Tuesday. We need your help for at least one day/week for the 4 weeks. But, if you can volunteer to teach both days of the week, that is GREAT! See Karen Lake if you have questions.
Here are the class meeting dates and times:
Saturdays: June 3, 10, 17 and 24 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Tuesdays: June 6, 13, 20 and 27 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Thanks Again for Your Donations for the Homeless
Our committee is grateful to everyone in the congregation who donated funds and/or clothing, tote bags, caps, toiletries and other items to the homeless guests at the Welcome Inn Day Center this past winter.
We raised a total of $300.00! We purchased men’s underwear (boxer briefs) and toiletries for the program. We also purchased about 15 pairs of jeans and 10 hoodie/sweatshirts from a used clothing store. In all, we delivered three trunkfuls of needed items to Covenant Presbyterian Church, where the program was housed this winter.
We still had enough money left over to make a cash donation to the Welcome Inn of $199.00!
The men and women served by this program are back living on the streets now. When they return, in early December, they will need everything again! We hope your generosity continues this fall, when we plan to do another drive for this worthwhile organization to help them stock up. Thanks again to everyone who helped!
GEMS: God’s Elegant Mature Servants
The next GEMS meeting will be on Thursday, May 25th at 11:30 a.m. We will meet for lunch at the Olive Garden on 2615 S Rochester Rd, Rochester Hills, MI 48307.
Cereal For Summer!
Soon our children will be finishing another year of school. For many children this means they may go without enough food to eat. The Presbytery’s Hunger Ministries Program is asking for our help. We will be collecting: breakfast bars, juice boxes, cereal and small boxes of raisins. Every box you donate will be given to families in need by our church partners through their food programs.
Please bring in your items by June 11th. They will be delivered to the Presbytery office on June 12th. Thank you for helping to keep our children fed.
Sunday School Schedule for May
May 14th: Mother’s Day. Matthew 20: 1-16 “The Generous Landowner”. Teachers: Becky Misuraca or Ruth Fedor/Karen Lake
May 21st: Last Sunday of Sunday School until September. Review of year. Teachers: Kelly Ray & Megan Ray
Our next church blood drive will take place on Monday, July 10th. For donors who wish to donate here on that day, please know that the Red Cross requires 8 weeks between blood donations, so you would not be able to donate at another location after May 14th.
Flowers for the Church Garden
Anyone interested in donating money to go toward the flowers to be planted outside, please see Nancy Sisunik in fellowship hall after church. You can also put the donation in an envelope and place tin the collection plate. Please mark it FOR FLOWERS.
May Is National Foster Care Month
Looking for that specific piece of the foster care puzzle where you fit in? Hear Heather Grasl, director of The New Foster Care, outline a new model for ways that congregations can better offer wrap-around support for our foster and adoptive parents at the upcoming Faith Communities Coalition on Foster Care. For more information or to help form a new ministry team to implement this new model, contact Rev. Kate Thoresen at email@example.com or 248-835-8151. Thursday, May 18, 6:30 PM, First Presbyterian Church, 1669 West Maple Rd., Birmingham, Calvin Hall .
